Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan announce plans to keep baby's arrival 'private' - USA TODAY

Don't look for Duchess Meghan to pose for the cameras hours after giving birth to her first child in late April or early May because it's not going to happen.

Buckingham Palace officials announced in a statement Thursday morning that she and Prince Harry plan on keeping the birth "private" for a while before announcing the news to the public.

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very grateful for the goodwill they have received from people throughout the United Kingdom and around the world as they prepare to welcome their baby," the statement reads. "Their Royal Highnesses have taken a personal decision to keep the plans around the arrival of their baby private. The Duke and Duchess look forward to sharing the exciting news with everyone once they have had an opportunity to celebrate privately as a new family."

In short, it could be hours or days before they tell the public the baby is here or appear for photos with their bundle of joy.

The announcement marks a major shift from the media hoopla that surrounded the arrivals of previous royal babies, like those of Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis – and even William and Harry themselves three decades ago.

In each of those cases, Duchess Kate and Princess Diana before her stood on the steps of St. Mary's Hospital in London, cradling their new babies within roughly 24 hours of delivery. When Kate gave birth to Louis, her third child, last April, she was camera-ready within eight hours.

The couple, who wed last May at Windsor Castle, recently moved from Kensington Palace in central London to Frogmore Cottage, a more secluded home near their wedding venue, located about 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of the capital.

The baby, whose gender the couple claims not to know, will be seventh in line to the throne behind Harry, who is sixth unless his brother and sister-in-law, Prince William and Duchess Kate of Cambridge, produce a fourth child.

The Sussex baby will mark a first for the royal family: He or she will be the first half-American royal baby and the first royal baby of mixed race: Meghan's father is white, her mother is black.

Meghan will be 37, going on 38, when the baby is expected in late April or early May. They have been married since May 2018. The pair say they are grateful for the goodwill messages they have received from around the world.
